Kitty Ussher has 25 years’ experience at the forefront of UK economic policy and is currently Chief Economist of the cross-party think-tank Demos.
Kitty was an MP and a Minister in the last Labour Government, serving as Economic Secretary to the Treasury - City Minister - in the early phase of the financial crisis and later as a Minister in the Department for Work and Pensions helping shape the Government’s response to the subsequent recession.
An economist by training, she holds an MSc in Economics from Birkbeck College, London, and an undergraduate degree in Politics and Economics (PPE) from Balliol College Oxford. In her early career, she worked as a Macroeconomic Forecaster for the Economist Intelligence Unit. She now advises individual firms and trade associations on Britain’s economic outlook and the likely implications for their sectors from future changes to government policy. Her clients have included Barclays, Google, John Lewis Partnership, the British Retail Consortium, Hermes Asset Management and Which?
In 2017 Kitty undertook a two-year sabbatical teaching maths in inner-city secondary schools as part of the inaugural Now Teach programme led by the FT columnist Lucy Kellaway. In addition to speaking at industry conferences she is an experienced media performer, including for the Today Programme and Newsnight.
